1. Identify
the nature of proof in Frank's monologue, siting evidence
he used in Charlie's defense.
Through
Franks Slade’s defense for Charlie he illustrates logos, pathos and ethos.
Logos can be clearly seen as Frank uses it to convince the committee that
everyone at that court hearing has Charlie’s future in there hands. Pathos can
be seen using his emotions via tone of voice, body gestures and movements, etc.
Ethos can be seen as he speaks from a position of authority and even goes so
far as to call into question the credibility and integrity of other people
therein. Resulting in a reverse sort of psychology.
how he delivered his personal experiences that
related to what Charlie had experienced.
2. Of the
four styles of dramatic or vicarious proof, which did Frank
exploit to turn attitudes around about Charlie? How did this style function in
terms of reason?
Likely, Franks experiences
relating to people losing limbs and how he was able to using imagry, draw this
picture for them thereby creating an emotional appeal.
3. What cultural myths or images were employed to
increase the appeal of Frank's argument? How did this influence his attempted
shift of opinion?
The value of change. Using
personal experiences to support his argument that Charlie was indeed noble for
what he did. Of course, this is using pathos to appeal to the audience persuade
them to his point of view.
4. Which of Reich’s parables
apply or applies to Frank’s reasoning.
Reich’s parable the triumphant
individual applies to Frank’s reasoning because through it all, Frank was able
to illustrate that Charlie has and further should continue to prevail because
of the things he went through and endured.
5. What was Frank’s reasoning
in terms of logical appeal?
Arguing from authority.
Certainly, citing evidence and facts as undisputed helps to logically convince
others of his arguments.
