Persuasion Application – Reich

Persuasion Application – Reich

1.         My artifact can be found here:

2.         Reich’s Cultural parable that can be found within my artifact, used by the speaker to create a cognitive effect of persuasion is that of The Mob at the Gates. Specifically, the speaker depicts America as a beacon of hope for the world when it comes to confronting and defeating ISIS. Further, if nothing is done then our freedom, democracy, and way of life is in jeopardy. Finally, the speaker gives an ominous warning, telling the viewers of what is to follow if nothing is done to defeat ISIS.

3.         The process premise that the artifact attempts to construct as a basis of persuasion is that of both needs and emotions. Specifically, Americans all have a need and desire to be safe and secure in their persons and property. Both of which are in grave danger and jeopardy if nothing is done to defeat ISIS. Further, the speaker uses fallacious reasoning citing such things as ISIS cannot be defeated in a certain way and “everybody knows that,” thereby using emotions to persuade others and not sound logic and reasoning. Finally, the speaker cites potential possibilities to instill fear in the hearts and minds of its viewers to persuade them to his position while offering no concrete evidence or facts as to why ISIS poses a significant and immediate threat to his viewers.

  2. Many Americans believe that the mob is at the gate and that we are a beacon of light and freedom for the world. There are times and situations in which I think we have asserted ourselves well. Other times we may be sticking our nose into where we don't belong. As far as immediate threats from ISIS are concerned, I really don't think we are in any immediate danger of a large-scale attack, but more of the type that was committed during the Boston Marathon. The threat is more likely from within rather than from some invading force. The danger may be in a pervading mentality that accepts or even supports such a perverse way of thinking and behaving.
